Thanks for the suggestion Ben. I'm hesitant to bypass Vim's default write mechanism - as I suspect there could well be lots of subtleties about it that I might learn about one by one, painfully. For example, the fileformat handling and backup file handling. I have written a get-permissions/set-permissions event pair, which was using stat and chmod under cygwin, and seemed to be working perfectly. As I tried to clean it up a little today before posting it (just in case it might one day help someone else) - I discovered that chmodding under cygwin was no longer correctly propagating through to linux - so more work appears to be needed. For a while yesterday though, it was working perfectly - I swear...
