.. did you try
changing the sound output settings in sound control panel -- do you
even have it, as 8.1 gave Monitors&Sound combined, but I do recall
one of my programs wanting the "split" Sound only control panel (I put
M&S upgrade to my 7.x system, too -- with SystemAV extensio does it
I think).

Just out of curiousity, what ROM image would you be using
with BasiliskII ?

BasiliskII in Linux worked much better for me on powerpc than the
osX one, but they may have improved it, and it would work better on
intel anyway. I never had much luck with anything in Classic.
