About three years ago, I resurrected a Quadra 650. I replaced the
defective hard drive and then put an operating system (7.5.3) on it
using only my PC (it was my first Mac). I had created a boot disk
using RAWRITE and burned a CD with System 7.5.3 and 7.5.5 plus several
other necessities (OpenTransport, etc.). Following the instructions
on Pickle's Low End Mac FAQ and Tyler Sable's 7.5.5 Zone, it was
relatively painless.

Recently, I received an LC 520 with a dead hard drive. I received a
replacement 50-pin SCSI drive (325MB) from a generous person on the
LEM Swap List. He went through the trouble of testing the drive and
then installing, an OS on it. I don't recall which version OS. I
have the 'Install Me First CD' for the LC which contains System 7.1.
I went through the install process for that CD, just to play around
with it. Eventually, I would like to get 7.5.3 installed on the drive
there to start with (from the CD I had created for the 'Project
Quadra') and then go to 7.5.5. I can't find that darn boot floppy
that I had originally made, so I recreated the boot disk using Apple's
7.5 Network Access Disk disk image. I can boot the 520 with the NAD
disk. I can replace the System Folder on the hard drive with the
System Folder of the NAD disk. I can boot the hard drive using the
same System that the NAD had. There are a few problems though.

When I insert the 'Install Me First CD' or my homemade 'System 7
Stuff' CD, neither will show on the Desktop. I know the CDs are
good. I can actually boot to the 'Install Me First CD'. Question #1:
Without using a paper clip (apparently there is a shortage of them in
my house), how can I eject the CD? Question #2: How do I get the CDs
to mount on the Desktop? Is there a CD driver missing from the NAD? If
so, there is only 10K of free disk space to put one on there.

The second problem that I have is that when I run Apple HD SC, it says
there are no suitable SCSI drives found on the bus (or something like
that). That's strange, I thought I just booted from the hard drive.
Drive Setup doesn't seem to help either. Question #3: How can I
initialize this drive (I forget the make and model, but I know it's
not an Apple branded drive)?

The crazy thing is that I did all of this before with only a PC. Now
I have the assistance of the Quadra 650 (with is not Internet attached
at this moment). I download the files on my PC. Unstuff the .bin.
Copy the .sea to a floppy. Carry it to the Quadra. Have the Quadra
tell me that it's a PC file. Copy the file to the Quadra's hard
drive. Open the .sea. Eject the floppy. Insert a Mac formatted
floppy. Copy the extract files to the Mac floppy. Eject that
floppy. Carry it to the LC 520 (on the other side of the house).
Yes, I could probably cut out a few steps if I just connected the
Quadra to the ethernet... maybe I will.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to format this drive and get
7.5.3 on it? Thanks.

Lonnie.
