Well, in fact Apple did come out with a non-Mac GUI workstation post-Mac - the IIGS, which was pretty limited but given the logical progression of the 65816 processor in the machine (8/16 bit like a 8088) would be to get faster and compete, or go away. I'm not sure why the Mac was the only possible future for Apple?
