The /// failed (and for good reasons) but Apple responded with the //e which was phenomenally successful, selling millions of units - probably the MOST successful Apple II. The //c was pretty successful but by the time it came out the rumours were already circulating that the Apple IIs days were numbered and the resources of the company were being redirected to the Mac - the IIGS was a great machine (still is, I have one on my desk in my home office :) but it was doomed not by being a market failure but by Steve Jobs strangling the Apple II group to create his visionary machine (which had very underwhelming sales, arguably until the iMac)...
