That did it!

Disk First Aid saw the drive, I clicked verify and a few minutes later
the drive was pronounced in perfect help and mounted on the desktop.

I was then able to move the files to both my 8.6 drive and my 9.2.2
drive (which also has 10.2 on it).

I rebooted into 10.2 that did not want to see the drive - just
initialize it, but 10.2 had the USB support I needed to copy the files
from the 9.2.2 partition to a 1 gig USB drive then sneaker net to my
PowerBook.

Thanks to all for you help and suggestions!

I am going to hold onto this beige G3 as my Mac swiss army knife, it
has a foot in both the old and new worlds. Keep that in mind if any of
you have a similar problem, I am glad to help.
