I used to use my the adapter for my 180 with no problem (the 180 was
the same as the 165c, but with an active matrix monochrome).

That's not quite right.

The stock adapter couldn't handle boot, as spinning up the hard drive
took more juice than the adapter could provide.  Once it was spun up,
it took less than 1.5A.

It didn't take a *lot* more than the power supply produces.
I took mine out of the packing materials, plugged it in, and it booted
right up.  I went through that first 9v quick--there was a layer of
plastic between the lead-acid battery and its contacts to insulate it
during shipping :)
