Dear all: I have a Performa 475 that I've recently rediscovered in my basement. A few years ago, my family discarded the monitor because when the computer was turned on, there was no video displayed. At the time, I was able to convince them to keep the computer itself since it doesn't take up much space. I know now that the most likely reason for the video issue is a bad/dead PRAM battery.
I recently bought a pair of 512Kb VRAM chips to replace the stock 256K pair. As I understand it, this will allow the computer to potentially support a much higher resolution, 800x600 or 1024x768, on modern 15" to 17" monitors. Can I connect a VGA monitor, since they're much easier to find, via a legacy DB-15 to VGA adapter? Here is a link to what I am talking about: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-VGA-SVGA-Monitor-Legacy-Mac-DB-15-Video-Adapter-/360361483585?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e737dd41 If I am able to use such an adapter, can I connect a flat panel monitor? Does anyone know how many colors/what resolution could be supported? Does a 15" vs. 17" monitor make a difference? Finally, how exactly do I go about putting in the new VRAM? I want to be extra cautious and do it right so I don't break anything. Should I insert at an angle and then straighten it up? Thanks in advance for all your help!
