Obvious solution that costs money: Buy a new HDD. HDDs do die
eventually - though usually not as quick as 5 years - and if you're
already having trouble with this one, do you really want to trust your
data with it? 1-2 TB HDDs are dirt cheap nowadays, so you'll get more
storage space than whatever came stock in the iMac.

Then again if a new HDD doesn't fix the problem, then it's something
else that's wrong, as another contributor suggested.
