I had a hard drive that exhibited the same symptoms in a 20" non-iSight iMac G5. The system logs showed I/O errors during boot and checks with Disk Utility. I did put in a new larger hard drive and that seemed to fix it. However, the old hard drive has worked fine for several years after moving it to a PC and reformatting it (partitioned for dual boot of XP and Linux). I suspect the problem could have been related to some capacitors in the iMac starting to bulge. It's simple enough to pull off the back cover and check the caps.
