Hi, The Mac Classic does not need the internal battery to boot from a hard drive, none of the Compacts Macs do except for the Color Classic.
I'm not surprised that hard drives from a Powermac G3 don't work in a Classic. Most likely you are trying 7200 rpm or faster drives that require a lot of power to spin up and the PSU from the Classic isn't strong enough. Also the newer SCSI drives often require a SCSI command to spin up and the SCSI controller from the Classic doesn't send this. However this can often be corrected by setting the "spin-up on power" jumper on the hard drive. I don't know if there's Mac OS on the drives you tried from your PowerMac. If there is: you need the 68K version for the Mac Classic where the G3 uses the Powermac version of Mac Os so this will never work. Drives without Apple Rom also need to be formatted with the patched Apple HD SC setup or FWB for example for the Classic to recognize them. Start from scratch with a working hard drive in the Classic and install Mac OS from with floppies or an external CD-Rom.
