Lower latencies are better, and 60ns FPM will work fine in a machine that demands 80ns FPM. However, 60ns is a latency I usually associate with EDO RAM. Sometimes EDO will work in an FPM machine, but sometimes it can cause physical damage (this definitely happens with Acorn RiscPCs). How did that > happen? That could either be a HDD fault (the original is ancient!), an IDE controller fault (capacitors?) or an NVRAM fault (battery). Some old HDDs develop “stiction” in the main bearing when at rest, and a slight jolt will free them up. This is a common cause of old Macs working fine after having just been set up in a new location, but failing to start later. I think it’s more common with the Mac II line’s SCSI drives (the Quantum 20 & 40 MB drives are notorious for it) than the later IDE ones, though. Some Macs hate having a dead NVRAM battery, and will boot more reliably with it removed. Others absolutely require a healthy battery. They’re not expensive if you know where to look.
