Whatever works! But in future, especially with HP
printers, download the free HP Network Printer Install
Wizard. Unfortunately I don't think they have a
Mac version anything like it, but they do have a
"legacy" download for the LaserJet 4, 5 and 6 series.

HP never had any LaserJet III Macintosh support but
for the LaserJet II series they had a customized
version of MacPrint, which can't be found on hp.com
and I bet it only worked with System 6.

Anyone know of third party software that will print
from a Mac to a LaserJet III, through an HP JetDirect
EX Plus print server? I know Strydent makes PowerPrint
for networks, but it comes with a print server box
and is expensive. Why it comes that way is Strydent
programs a server name into the box they sell and
their PowerPrint software looks for only that name.
Bleah! They'd sell lots more of the Network version
if they had it where the user could plug in ANY
printserver name and just sell the software. At least
since the EX Plus series, the external JetDirects
have been Mac/Appletalk compatable.

I can print to my LaserJet 4 from my Macs using its
built in JetDirect but they can't even see the
LaserJet III because there simply are no Mac/network
drivers available other than Strydent's proprietary
product. I give it an even 50/50 that with a bit
of ResEdit work I could make PowerPrint for networks
work with my HP server. If the name is in plaintext
and there's no crc/hash checking on the name it'd
be easy, but if the software runs internal name tamper
checks or encrypts the server name, that's beyond
what I could do.

I do have a version of PowerPrint with the serial
to parallel cable that works with the LJIII, but then
I can only print to it with the one Mac. With DAVE
I could possibly share the printer, but I could only
get PowerPrint to work _without_ the PostScript
cartridge installed and DAVE can only share PostScript
printers.
