As for those headlights: You will certainly get better performance out of your high-wattage headlights by using a relay (or relays) fed with a fat wire from the battery. A relay provides the current path with a "short cut" so it does not need to go through the many connections and switches enroute from the battery to the filaments. So even if the obvious symptoms that you suffered have abated at this point, putting in a relay for each channel (56a, 56b) is good preventive medicine.
