I have the Impact case, one of the TPU rubber cases, and a plain old rubber skin type case. I did use the TPU case for quite a while for the same reasons you mentioned but lately, I'm using the rubber type skin which gives me some protection with no bulk and slip free. I missed the friction provided with the Impact but this case is even less bulk than the Impact case and I still get the benefits of being slip free.
The Impact case however is an excellent case especially if you are prone to dropping your phone quite a bit. In fact, I just got an order for 9 tpu cases which are all different colors ranging from purple, to blue, to clear, to neon yellow. They don't cover the bottom part of the screen like the impact case from Otter Box does, but it does form-fit the phone very well and really let's it shine through. The nice thing about these cases is that you can put them on and take them off with ease, yet they stay on the phone very nicely. I also like the fact that I can go back to my impact case whenever I want. The one I don't use any more is the Defender case.
