Okay, so push notifications let your phone know that there is mail, right? Rather than using battery life to check every so often?

Part of it, Fred, is honestly just taking the load off your phone and
its battery. If your phone has to check for mail, say, every fifteen
minutes, that's going to eat up a fair chunk of battery. Of course,
exchange works slightly differently; the exchange server actually
"calls" your phone if you will, so your phone doesn't have to "call"
the server every fifteen minutes or so. But there are some problems
with Gmail exchange and I'm also led to believe that this takes
slightly more battery life than true push notifications pushed to your
iPhone from an app.

For some business people they really do want to know the second they
receive an Email, but I think for most of us it's a balance between
fast checking of Email and taking that load off your battery.

Just curious, what is so important about a mail app having push

Well, I figure it's free and you don't know until you try. So, I'm gonna
get it and see if there is any difference other than the ability to mark
messages as spam, or add stars to them and let you all know.

I have a Gmail account and use it in the regular E-mail app. I get
notifications when the mail comes in. Why would I want the Gmail app
over
this? With the screen readers, this might come out as sarcastic which is

not

my intention. I really want to know, smiles.

Hello all,

I haven't been following this list a lot lately so if this topic has
already been beaten to death, I apologize in advance - I did a super
quick search of past postings and didn't see it!

For all you Gmail users out there, the Gmail app, while not entirely
accessible in certain respects, now has push alerts for new Emails.
There have been a few alternatives that I've used in the past, such as
the Ultimate Notifier app - which checks mail every thirty seconds -
and setting up a Google Exchange account in Mail - which has a few
bugs. Now, you can have true push notifications for your Gmail
account.

Cheers,

Grant
