This indeed is much of my concern, though the detail has its use, though is also obtainable off wikipedia I would think. I think the Hadley school for the blind sold a talking globe once, for a heck of a lot more money, but it did have hotspots to touch and you would get the same very basic info they look for in school kiddy exams. It was very expensive too.
Now, it would be interesting to know how, I was going to say "if at all", the Chinese tackle geography edu to their blind. I once invisaged how they could make a superb tactile globe with tons of details if moulded on the outside skin of a gym ball. We know gym balls are big and strong, so would make an ideal platform and economic to make. Detailed too with that much real estate to work on. For those that haven't seen one, they're like a heavy duty beach ball, anything from 16-30inch diameter, and strong enough to sit and bounce on. These days, the details and key would be digital, and hopefully written, or interpretted by a real English speaker, Chinese English can get peculiar in a hurry sometimes. I know there are some wonderful globe apps for the sighted, even show the earth curvature and the means to rotate it. Something like this though…other than just touching different spots on a flat screen, what if any detailed information can a blind person gleam from it besides a very general concept of very specific points on the screen? What about spacial awareness? Things like borders and relative distances, etc.? I’m skeptical but would very much like to be persuaded that it’s much more than just a novelty app. From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Sunday, February 22, 2015 8:23 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Talking atlas for iPad Hi Tom, Thanks for that brief review, almost sounds good enough to buy an iPad. Are you able to visualize where countries are compared to others with this or get a sense of borders and shapes of countries or does it just say which country you are on and then give some information about it? Would be nice if somebody did a good Podcast about it showing off the various features and what the app can do and what it sounds like. If I owned an iPad I’d buy this in a second. I assume for this having a full-size iPad would be better than an iPad Mini? I can definitely see why this would not be something that works well on the small screen of an iPhone. I had to have my wife rescue me. Also, don’t turn the speech rate up in the settings menu at first. 0.1 is normal speech and 1.0 is about three hundred percent. However, once vo was turned off, the world atlas is speaking every country as my finger moves over it. that gives me more access to information than I have had for 30 years when I could actually see an atlas. The app is already worth 30 dollars to me. Tom Frank vermont...@gmail.com On Feb 22, 2015, at 10:18 AM, Tom Frank <vermont...@gmail.com> wrote: Okay guys, I just bought the app and will check it out. Keep in mind apple gives you two weeks to try a product, but I think the price is to high and on top of that in app purchases for a trivia game? For that price you should get both. Just my opinion. -----Original Message----- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of RobH. And no, none of us want to pay that much until someone says it works as well as they say on the site, and even on Applevis where the link first showed up. So we're all looking for a volunteer with £30 to spare for trying this product. Pity we couldn't all gift a proportion of the cost to a volunteer to try it and report back publically. I've not tried gifting to know how much control of amount one has; but if ten of us sent £3/$5 each, it would be worth that to know the answer maybe? JMO, RobH, who'd also like this. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it. Is it truly accessible? I don't want to buy it until I find some one who has had experience with it since it is so expensive.
