I'm not sure. I had similar problems with indoor cycling and thought I probably 
wasn't pumping hard enough. For outdoor walks, I've stopped using the workout 
app because the number of calories and amount of exercise don't seem to be any 
different in the activity app whether I'm running the Workout app or not. On 
the other hand, when I use 7-Minute Workout Pro and run the Workout app, 
Activity counts it as 7 minutes of exercise, and it doesn't count it that way 
if the Workout app isn't running.

I think the biggest difference when having Workout running is that it checks 
your heart rate more often, and it uses the phone's GPS when you're doing an 
outdoor workout to confirm how far you've gone. I think your heart rate has to 
be way up for it to count as exercise, but I'm not sure how high it has to be.

As for watch placement, make sure the band is tight enough that the watch stays 
still. Also, make sure the watch is on top of your writs. You might try looking 
at your heart rate during the workout and also sometime when you're not working 
out to see if the readings make sense. I'm really not sure what else to 
suggest. I wonder if there are bugs, or whether this app just requires a really 
high heart rate to count. I wish the user guide provided more detail about how 
calories burned and level of exercise are counted.
