Hello Wayne,

Do you know if the songs are actually gone from your music library, or is it
just your playlists that are messed up? I’ve used iTunes Match, and now Apple
Music, since they first became available. I’ve seen lots of issues with the
contents of playlists suddenly being lost and unfortunately the damaged
playlists quickly propagate to iTunes for Windows and Mac.

If you have a copy of iTunes that has a correct copy of your playlists, then
you can use that machine to recover them. Disable the internet connection, fire
up iTunes, and export all of your playlists which you can do by going into the
file menu while focussed on a playlist, choosing the library submenu, then
choosing the “export playlist” option. This will be a backup, and I’d recommend
doing this every now and then. Then, duplicate all your playlists, which can be
done from the context menu while focussed on a playlist. Give them slightly
different names. Then, you can re-establish the internet connection and let
your new playlists sync up to the cloud and this should happen correctly. If it
does, you can eventually delete the old playlists. If it doesn’t, you have the
exported playlists as a backup.

If the playlists are already corrupt on all your machines, there’s one more
thing to look at. iTunes regularly creates a file called iTunes Music
Library.xml which is located in your iTunes directory. It contains the contents
of your playlists along with other info about your iTunes library. If you
happen to have an old version of this file from a backup (e.g. if you use Time
Machine on a Mac), you can re-import it into iTunes which will recreate all
your playlists. I believe you do this from the “import playlist” item in the
library submenu under the file menu.

If the songs are completely gone from your library, then I’m not sure what to
say. Either way, be sure to let Apple know that these issues are happening!

This Email is very brief so please let me know if you want clarification on
anything. It is based only on my personal experience of dealing with these
issues every now and then, so if you try to follow these instructions and you
lose music or data, I very much apologize.

Cheers,

Grant
