With itunes match, any music you have ripped or acquired is matched with the
apple server library and, if a better copy is found, you are linked to it.

I don't have an answer, but just out of curiocity, if you subscribe to Apple
Music isn't subscribing to iTunes Match duplication?

Subject: iOS 9.3, Apple Music and iTunes Match

Greetings all. I updated my iPhone 6S to iOS 9.3 last night. Last fall I had
signed up for iTunes Match in order to keep all my songs in a digital locker in
the cloud and take with me to future phones. I've done several iOS updates
since then without a problem. Last night though, to my utter shock, nearly all
of the 4,200 songs in my collection, along with the around 800 songs that I
have added to playlists from Apple Music, had disappeared. Over the last few
months, I have setup several playlists for different things, like love songs,
worship music, Christmas music, and "all songs" which has everything in my
collection. It was quite a shock to see the All Songs playlist go from around
4,200 songs to 139 songs, or the Hard and Heavy playlist go from 330 songs to
just 2 songs. I've got the 4,200 songs on an external drive, but not the Apple
Music that I've saved. I've spent a long time tediously deleting what I don't
want from my collection and don't look forward to doing it all over again.
Short of doing a complete restore, does anyone have any ideas how I can get my
music back from iTunes Match? I'm not sure if this is specific to iTunes Match
or Apple Music since I subscribe to both. Whatever the case, it is extremely
frustrating and makes me wonder if iTunes Match is worth the time, especially
if the songs are going to suddenly disappear after 5 or 6 months.

On a related note, does anyone use Google Play Music and if so how do you like
it? What do you like and not like about Play Music? It looks similar to the
Apple offerings, except that with Play Music, you can store up to 50,000 songs
for free. That alone is tempting.

Best,
Wayne
