I really wish we had a blind-friendly navigational GPS app which used Google map data; I don’t know why we don’t, the Google data is freely available (I wrote such an app for laptops running Window-Eyes, which had a GPS receiver). Yes, there could be a charge from Google to the app developer if you have a high enough volume of data queries, but it was very small, so charging a little something for the app should easily cover it. I never had to pay anything.
Google would also give you all the POIs as well as the mapping data (I did in my app), so you would not have to use four square. I think it would be a big improvement. You don’t have to have a 4 square account to use blindsquare but I think it helps you check into a place if you wish. I don’t use the internals of 4 square so don’t know much about it.
