Something that probably wouldn’t help you right now but, the software engineering students at McGill university in Montreal have put together an app using Google maps. Right now it is still only for the Montreal area as a test but is going across Canada in the next month or so. It is called “Autour” which is the French word for “Around”, but the app is in English. I very much like its radar mode witch, with off ear headphone such as the Treks give a constant beep or click going around 360º with the user at the center point. This is on request. Also, if the phone is lifted horizontally, it automatically goes into beam mode which will announce what’s around and where as the user turns the phone around. The ideal way to wear it is in a pouch around the neck with the phone pointing down and the screen away from the chest. When the phone is lifted, the top of the phone becomes the direction of the points of interest. If the user doesn’t like the click or beep of the radar mode, it can be turned down so low you can’t hear it but the voice announcing the point of interest comes from its direction. So, if it announces a bus stop that is on your left, the voice announcing it comes from the left and so on. I think it is an app that has a lot of potential. I have been testing this app for the professor working with the students. I will ask him if he plans to open it to all of North America anytime soon and if there are any plans of going worldwide. Don’t know if it is easier to find now but it was a bit of a problem finding it in the app store. In case you would like to look at it, try Autour in the search field and, if you don’t find it, you will by entering McGill in the field and going through all the apps until you find it. Yes, there could be a charge from Google to the app developer if you have a high enough volume of data queries, but it was very small, so charging a little something for the app should easily cover it. I never had to pay anything. Google would also give you all the POIs as well as the mapping data (I did in my app), so you would not have to use four square. I think it would be a big improvement. You don’t have to have a 4 square account to use blindsquare but I think it helps you check into a place if you wish. I don’t use the internals of 4 square so don’t know much about it.
