OK, I maybe made things simpler than they are but App Store,
podcasts and some other parts could be easier to use and navigate.
In the times when iTunes were "accessible", I'm quoting this for
reason, it wasn't usable at all. Making ten, fifteen or twenty
tabs to get to desired element or speech lags between keystrokes
were everything but ussable for everyday use. If something is
accessible it doesn't mean it is practical. I could never use
iTunes on my PC as default player and Windows Media Player or
Winamp, even Foobar 2000 are far better solutions.
Speaking of iTunes replacements, there is something called Media
Monkey which some of my sighted friends use for copying media and
ringtones to iPhone but I don't know how accessible it is.There
were also something called iTools but it was partly accessible and
needed lots of cursor routing.

I agree with what you say below except that i Tunes is
much more than just a player that let's you sync your media
content with your device. It also manages your media, let's you
access streaming content and purchase content from the i Tunes
store. Personally, I'd rather see some of these functions broken
out into simpler more straight forward applications.

Hi!
I'm going o answer to the original post here since I've lost the
topic
thread.
I agree Freedom Scientific, GW Micro and NV Access are
responsible for
how will their respective products will interact with different
kindsof
software on Windows compatible PCs.
However, I don't agree they are completely responsible. Software
developers have the means and ability to make their apps more
simple,
more accessible and more hookable to some standards so the
screen
readers can use the most of the app interface with no further
adjusting,
making scripts, set files or external modules.
iTunes, as an app in question, is way complicated and
graphically
furnished than it should be for its purpose. Long story short,
iTunes is
just a player with ability to synchronize with iDevices, nothing
more
nothing less and it could be much, much simpler than it is.
Regarding its design, basically it has left side with some kind
of tree
view with various categories and the right side with options,
settings
and controls for selected category. Tis can easily look like
Winamp
Preferences dialog or Jaws Settings Center, both accessible and
usable
to the core.
OK, now someone will tell Winamp needs some Jaws scripting which
is true
and it is obvious Jaws Settings Center has to be accessible but
similar
dialogs found in other apps are not screen reader supported and
still
are accessible. Right now I can think of Settings dialog of
Utorrent,
Free Download Manager and there are tones of apps with this kind
of
interface.
If the app is designed in some standards screen reader will have
a
better chance to interact with it and Apple is the first who
should know it.

I tend to agree with you myself, but
others have pointed out on this
list that the accessibility of App Store apps is the
responsibility of
the app developers. Apple publishes the accessibility
specifications,
so it's up to the app developer to follow those
specifications. The
same reasoning would apply to a developer writing an
application for
Windows, where there's also plenty of information on how to
make your
application accessible.
This is also one of the reasons why I still like the third
party
screen reader developer option. It means there's one more
interested
party out there worrying about whether I can access an
application or
not. How much of a priority can it be for a company to make
their
application accessible on a competitors platform or have their
screen
reader jump through hoops to make a competitors application
accessible?

Well, while it may not all be up to
Freedom Scientific or VFO or
whatever they are called now, it is both the responsibility
of Apple and
the screenreader makers. I sure hope that VFO is having
talks with Apple
about iTunes accessibility since only they can tell Apple
what Apple
needs to do so that they can do what they must do.
Apple used to point out that iTtunes worked best with Window
Eyes, but I
think for a while before Windo Eyes became part of VFO Jaws
was actually
working at least as good or better and now that both
screenreaders are
under the same hat so to speak I really hope Apple and VFO
get their
wires crossed in a way that is going to result in an
improvement to
accessibility and not a reduction.

Hi. Has anyone gotten the latest itunes to function with
jaws? I talked
to apple accessibility and their take is that since we’re
using jaws,
it’s their problem.
