I just walked into my AT&T store (where they will set this up), but you can 
also go to http://att.com/gophone to have a look.

 

Note the $5 discount you get for setting up auto-pay with a creditcard, which 
brings the basic plan down from $45 to $40.

That is cheaper than Consumer Cellular for twice the data and way more minutes 
as we have 250  minutes and 1.5 GB of data for $5.00 more than whayou are 
paying.

less?  I know T-mobil is slightly less at around $30 per month (but they limit 
the voice minutes), so I am curious about Consumer?

I have only had Consumer Cellular, so I cannot speak to what happens when you 
change from a major carrier, but Consumer Cellular has an app that shows your 
minutes used, text messages used and data used.  Granted, it is 24 to 48 hours 
before you can truly trust the numbers.  They also have a policy to alert you 
via Email when you are approaching your monthly limit.  Plus, now instead of 
charging a penalty if you go over, they simply bump you up to the next level, 
which is usually only $10 and since you ccan change plans monthly if you want 
to, you can just change back at the start of the next month.
I've never fully understood the visual voice mail stuff, but voice mmail works 
great and I don't have to call in to get it, it is just there on the phone.

When switching from a major carrier to a reseller, things like visual
voice mail and keypad codes that display the number of minutes and
data used are not available to the customer of the reseller.  Losing
these frills is worth the savings for me.
