I don't think the presence of a screen protector negatively impacts the performance of the phone. If it did, it would also impact sighted users, who also touch their screens. For me personally, I don't think their worth it, but if it gives you piece of mind then go for it. I tend to be a bit over protective of my devices, but my wife doesn't want a device she needs to worry about, and it's important to her that she be able to just toss it into her purse without having to worry about scratching the screen. For her, she always uses cases and screen protectors. For me, I prefer the look and feel of the phone itself, and I don't want to loose the feel of a $700 phone by wrapping it in a $30 case.

In the example below, I agree it was fortunate that there was a screen protector on the phone, but I would only add that just because the screen protector cracked doesn't mean the phone's screen would have shown any damage whatsoever. Apple uses pretty tough screens.

Hi,

I am 100% behind the glass screen protectors. This past summer I was
sitting outside with my wife and kids, at the cabin. The two-year-old
was playing with some larger rocks, the size of golf balls. He
accidentally threw one and it hit directly on the screen of the IPhone
I was currently reading a audio book on. The glass screen protector
spiderwebbed, but the actual IPhone screen was safe and sound.

   Hi malcolm,

Yes, I think using a good and well-installed screen protector is a good
thing. It will prevent yoru screen from getting all those little scratches
and dings it can get and if you get one of the glass ones which are totally
the ones I recommend a screen protector can spread out the force of any
impact if you ever drop it.

I don’t like the plastic ones, they usually make the screen less slippery,
some people like this but I like to be able to slide my finger around
easily.

I bought a glass screen protector at an Apple Store just over a year ago.
The girl at the Apple Store installed it for me and while at first it felt a
bit dull and less slippery, a couple of days of use fixed that and now you
can’t even tell the difference, it’s still perfectly applied and I really
like it.

   Hello,

I have never used a screen protector with any of my iPhones but my friends
all use them. They are not VoiceOver users so I was wondering whether there
would be any point in getting one for my iPhone7. What impact do they have
on the usability of the iPhone from a VoiceOver perspective?

   Any observations and recommendations welcome.
