Hello list, I was wondering if anyone’s had experience with any smart kitchen scales and whether they’ve found any of their accompanying apps to be VoiceOver accessible?
I read this San Francisco Chronicle article on smart appliances and how in general they’re not catching on: https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Smart-kitchen-appliances-not-cat ching-on-yet-12453777.php However, one thing that was mentioned aside from the popular instant pot which has been brought up on a lot of blindness related lists and many of us in fact have, are smart kitchen scales. I currently use the My Weigh Vox 3000 talking kitchen scales and while the Vox scales are pretty accurate and can measure to the gram, they’re always breaking down on me. My Weigh supposedly offers something like a twenty year warranty, but seriously, a scale lasts me around three and maybe four months if I’m lucky. This last time I sent my two scales in for replacements, I got a note back saying that this would be the last exchange they would be making. Not to mention that you have to pay for shipping. That and unless you’ve got more than one scale, you’re out of luck for the approximate three to four weeks it takes for the turnaround from sending it out to getting a working unit back. Gripes with My Weigh durability and their crappy warranty response, I’ve been looking for an alternative. Unfortunately, for standalone talking scales, they’re really the only game in town. At least if you want to the gram accuracy anyway. In any event, I came across a few “smart” kitchen scales on Amazon. I’m probably going to reach out to these companies directly, but thought I’d touch bases in case anyone’s already using them in their kitchen. Ideally, I’d like to continue to use a simple standalone talking kitchen scale, but considering that each Vox scale can go from $30 to $50 or more depending on where and when you buy them. Not to mention the cost of shipping when you have to send them in to be fixed/replaced. Spending a few bucks more for a bluetooth connected one becomes a way more attractive option.
