I should mention that I purchased an unlocked iPhone 7 from Apple that I have
been using with ATT. Yesterday, I went to Comcast who has good deals for
xfinity customers price wise using Verizon networks. However, after checking
my serial and Imei numbers, I did not make the switch because they insisted and
made all kinds of excuses about how my iPhone 7 cannot be transferred and how I
need to get a new phone with them. I called Verizon directly to see what they
say and same old excuses. Both Comcast and Verizon are saying this is a
specific problem with ATT iPhone 7's. That is after I insisted that the phone
is unlocked but they are saying it’s the specific configuration after I chose
to use the phone with ATT. I checked with Apple and they are saying that my
phone is unlocked and that I could try to get them to put in a Verizon sim
card, but Comcast and Verizon won't budge. I googled this and got the
following poast that pretty much shares my experiences:

Anna, we're getting ready to unlock our t-mobile phones. A person at the
t-mobile store told us if we have another iphone on a different network other
than t-mobile, that if you were to take the sim card out of that other
network's phone, and put it into the phone you want to unlock, it would pop up
some messages with the promps to unlock it. Here's some more information, with
t-mobile, if you buy a phone from them, pay cash for the phone in full, it will
still come with the phone locked so you would still have to unlock the phone,
but if you could buy this same iphone from apple it would come unlocked. We
don't know this from any actual experience but verizon phones, claim all their
phones are unlocked, and a person from oneof the corprid verizon store said
the phones being unlocked has been going on for about 4 years. One thing about
it, if you put another sim card from another carrier that phone and it works,
than you would know the phone is unlocked. We don't know about at&t about this,
but we suggest you could ask at&t, and we hope you get an honest answer. I
would say to ask more than one individual at at&t, I would ask both, someone in
one of your city's corprid at&t stores, and also you could ask the customer
service when you call on the phone. If your phone is completely paid for we
suggest you get it unlocked soon.
Before ending this message, we just called verizon and at&t. According to the
customer service person from the at&t customer service number, she said the
phones were locked, but to find out for sure there's 2 things you could do
besides calling the store. With your imei number you could call either the at&t
customer service or call the store and they should be able to tell you. The
second way to check with your imei number is to search for an imei checker. One
of the results for an imei checker I found was to check and see if one's imei
number was on t-mobile. There's probably imei checkers for all the carriers.
Let us know what you find out, Anna, and possibly someone knows a bit more.

Hi all,

Is there a way to find out whether a phone is unlocked or not? I bought mine
from Apple last fall, specifying AT&T as the carrier. It's an iPhone X. I seem
to remember hearing that these phones came unlocked, but I'm not sure.
I'd rather not have to do the restore from backup if it's not necessary.

Best,
Anna
