I apologize if this has already been said, but there is an easy work-around
if you are experiencing this problem. I noticed some time ago that, if you
are using headphones to listen to a book or anything for that matter, simply
pulling the headphone plug part of the way out of the jack on the phone
automatically stops playback of whatever you are listening to. I found it
much easier to pull the plug out a little and pop it back in than to worry
about the home button and voice over.

I'm using an iPhone 4s and running IOS 6. It's working as described for me
too.

I never tried this before reading your post. But it works for me just as you
described. That is, playing music with the screen locked, then a double
press of the home button brings up the track name and artist along with a
pause button and at the bottom of the screen the unlock option.
