What many do not realize is the pressure phone companies have to
maintain a relationship with Apple. They are required to buy a certain
number of phones and sell them at any price they wish. As a partner,
the big phone companies may get secret information, such as advanced
notice of Apple discontinuing the SE. Apple needs to move this
inventory of old phones and AT&T needs to meet its quota or it will be
forced to buy phones from Apple that it cannot move through its sales
channel easily. Apple could offer deeply discounted phones to AT&T
who then sells them only to existing customers with really old phones
at a steep discount. Craig gets a brand new cheap iPhone and the
companies are happy because Apple was able to maintain pricing power,
eliminate unneeded inventory, and AT&T can meet its sales quota this
year.

Craig, I understand your interest in keeping your provider. I live in
a really big city and the major companies all provide service here.
downstate, Sprint and T-Mobile service is spotty and some areas are
only served by Verizon or AT&T. You may be in a similar situation.
