The current Canute does 5 lines of Braille at 28 cells a line, after which you
refresh manually. It’s not portable (in the sense that we’ve come to
understand).

The MPower will probably not be supported by the newer computers/screen
Readers.

There is perhaps one or two displays with autoscroll, but then you are
talking $2500 or more.

From everything I've read, the Orbit Reader 20 is the best display for the
money, $449 plus shipping.

It uses an SD card for reading books, or connects via bluetooth to mobile
devices or computers that have bluetooth, or USB cable to a computer.

I do not know about NVDA, but I believe it works with Jaws, though it may
need to be in a mode where you only get 18 cells unless Freedom Scientific has
an updated driver for it.

You can read more about it by searching for the Orbit Reader user guide on
the American Printing House web site: www.aph.org

been interested in purchasing for quite a while now. They're very useful if one
is left without speech, which happened to me a couple months back. it was a
nightmare to fix without one. I'm also interested in reading off a display, as
Braille books are way too bulky. with that said, which would you guys recommend
that's relatively cheap? I've seen the displays go for thousands, which is a
little insane. Is the orbit reader the cheapest display on the market? does it
work with all screen readers like Jaws and NVDA< and does it work on mobile
devices as well? what's the speed on it, and do you guys know of any displays
that will auto scroll? that is, will detect the position of your hands on the
display and scroll accordingly? is that a thing? if not, it definitely should
be. having to press a button repeatedly to scroll is a little crazy. I have a
device with a built in display, really old device, the Braillenote MPower. I've
no idea how to go about connecting the device to a computer though. I think it
used a serial connection if I'm not mistaken, it was a while back. I still have
the device here so if you guys know if those old devices will work, and a way
to use them on modern operating systems, let me know. thanks so much for your
help! tc all

          Hey Anthony,

          To answer your questions.

          1. Yes it can be used as a stand alone notetaker. The interesting
part of this function is there is two modes for the Brailliant

          A. Bluetooth mode - this is when the device is connected to the
iPhone or iPad. This will allow you to use the Braille display to control every
aspect of the I

Device. So you could use the iDevice and another app for note taking
tasks.

          B. Offline mode - This allows you to use the device as a stand alone
notetaker. There is a simple interface to navigate files, and there is a clock
and stop watch in this mode as well.

Note - To switch between these modes there is a physical switch on
the back of the device. To sync the notes that have been taken with the
notetaker functions you will have to flip the switch on the back of the device
to bluetooth mode and the braille display will sync with the companion app on
your iOS device. You must be signed in with an iCloud account or Gmail account
to have it sync. If you are signed in with your iCloud account it will sync
notes with the Notes application that is now on all of Apple's operating
systems. You then can edit, print or view them from your iPad, iPhone and Mac.
It’s a really cool feature. All of your notes that are saved in the Notes
Application will be synced back and forth between your iDevices and the
Brailliant 14. This is the feature that really sells me on the device.

                Hello Lelia. My condolences.

I have a Brailliant 14 for my phone. You do have to pan, and
since It only has 14 cells, the speech is usually ahead of how fast the Braille
displays. But I really like it. I tried the new BrailleMe from a company in
India and could never get it to pair with the phone. I have seen a demo of
something called El Braille from Freedom Scientific, or whatever they are
calling themselves now, and it is really cool---it's a Windows 10 tablet
dressed up to look like a notetaker.

But on my desktop I use an Alva Satellite 570, which I bought
used. So I am not the source of the latest and greatest. Of course the Alva
will have nothing to do with the phone. (grin)

Hope you can find something that will work well for you.
Braille with the computer has become so essential to me that I can't imagine
trying to do without it.

wondering is if anyone has used many braille displays which do you think is the

just wondering.
