Robin, I know what you are saying. If the phone is locked, you get a notification that a message has come in, and it is even read by VoiceOver; however, if you are in a chat...sending messages back and forth...there is no indication that the other person has sent a message unless you swipe and see if you can locate one. Kind of a pain, but doable. Perhaps in the near future they can get VoiceOver to read as it does in Messages.
