If someone is working on a computer the whole day, it is easier to use computer 
rather than a separate device which you have to pay for. But rather than using 
an app you can send yourself an email and I have heard of computer based free 
services for sending texts. You can text to your name and thereby avoid the 
app. It is possible the app has other features to justify using it.
