Ah, I see. I didn't see any of that in your original email. Do you have images turned off by any chance? I've seen web sites in the past display similar messages when they thought you were coming in with a text based browser. Also, isn't IE9 out? Could it be that Google Groups takes advantage of some features in the latest IE, Firefox and Chrome that IE8 may not have? BTW, I am running the latest Firefox and Chrome, and I haven't come across this message in either browser.
Also, since Google does develop it's own browser, I wouldn't put it past them to recommend that browser over the alternatives. I also wouldn't begrudge them if they choose to do most of their testing with Chrome instead of IE or another browser.
