It sounds like you may be confusing Duolingo with Rosetastone.
When I've played around with Duolingo, I've had to type, and speak and select a 
sequence of words, but don't recall picture based stuff. Not saying that there 
aren't images, but I do know that Rosetastone is pretty much all images.
