Hi, in the case of the Siri window, when you dictate something, it places what you said in an edit field, it should be around the middle of the screen. Just tap it to confirm where it is, then double-tap to make it editable.

In the case of the dictate button, like if you are sending a text, the edit field is already editable and so you can correct it that way.

Hello Wayne, one thing which I want to mention is that I believe if Siri
doesn't understand something you say, you can double-tap the edit field and
correct it and it should learn from that and so as time goes on, it will
eventually learn your speech patterns. I know that Dragon Dictation does this,
and assume Siri does as well.

I was skeptical of Siri when I heard of it last year with the 4S. I
stuck with my iPhone 4 and wondered what all the fuss was about. It
sounded interesting, but nothing I would really use. Since I have
gotten an iPhone 5 2 weeks ago, I have started using Siri and the
dictation feature on the virtual keyboard a lot more. I still have
times when the dictation or Siri will misunderstand me. Sometimes it
has happened 3 or 4 times in a row with Siri and I gave up. With
dictation, it happens the first time but the second time it gets what
I'm saying correct. I use it most often when filling out the mobile
web form to schedule taxi service with my local cab company. I used to
use the Apple Bluetooth keyboard for this task, but now I can just
speak my phrases for what I want to fill in the various fields, or use
the virtual keyboard to type in corrections or short items in the
fields. Last night was the crowning moment for me and when I knew that
Siri was going to be very helpful. I was riding with my fiance and we
were trying to make our way back from going out to eat. She's someone
who relies heavily on GPS. She pulled over and when she was typing in
the GPS our destination, i asked Siri to direct us to my home address.
I recall hearing on a podcast recently that you need to turn VoiceOver
off when in the maps app and when getting spoken directions. I did
this, and soon afterward, we started getting exact directions. We even
went off route since we were not able to make a certain turn, and the
voice caught it and redirected us back to the original route. Both my
fiance and I were very impressed with the task and Siri's performance
in maps. It's a nice feeling to be able to ask Siri how to get to a
certain address and be told exactly where to go. Siri and I are not
communicating perfectly all of the time yet, but we're getting there,
and possibilities are starting to form for me for things I can use
Siri and dictation for.

when I heard of people last year that used dictation, I found myself
asking, "Why not just type in the item you lazy person?" Now though,
it is so much easier to say what you want typed in and then do short
corrections, rather than messing with typing things in. I am not to
the point of dictating medium to long text messages correctly every
time, but slowly getting there.

Yes I agree. In fact if I am going to use Siri for a lot of interaction,
I disable Voice Over. Now there are cases where you get more information
displayed on the screen. For example if I ask Siri what the population
of Chicago is, she will tell me, but not by speaking it, instead, she
displays the information. So, in this case y ou have to use Voice Over.
However for the weather, scheduling reminders, meetings, making calls,
or sending texts, I definitely turn off Voice Over as it gets annoying
otherwise.

Oh ok I like the idea of having no VoiceOver when I use Siri. It seems
more logical and more like a natural conversation this way.

Hi Chris,

I use SIRI with my iPhone 4S and Voiceover turned on all the time both
for
asking it to dial numbers, for asking questions and for dictation. It
works
fine, only thing is that if Voiceover is not turned on SIRI will
automatically listen if, for example, you say "Text Christopher
Hallsworth"
and if you not follow right away with what you want the text message
to say,
SIRI will say something ike "What do you want to say to Christopher
Hallsworth". If you have Voiceover on you have to double tap or press
the
home key again to make SIRI listen, if Voiceover is off you can simply
speak
your message and SIRI will hear it.

Ok, this is where the iPod Touch or iPad or iPad Mini comes in, as at
least
I can try Siri with VoiceOver before committing to an iPhone 4s or 5.

I tried Siri on a carer's iPhone 5 today. What I can't get over is the
fact it just recognized my voice instantly without training. I said
hello,
it said hello back. Then I said how are you? It said I'm very well. I
then
asked what the weather is like. It then brought up the Weather app. The
carer is fully sighted so of course does not need VoiceOver. But she
told me
about the Weather app opening.
I just find this amazing because I tried a few third party Voice
Dictation apps, namely Vokul, on my iPhone 4, and they do not like my
unusually high voice at all. Yet Siri does!
Just some thought from a prospective Siri user.
I also felt her iPhone 5. It's really nice and feel I can use it no
problem.
