I’m the original poster. I had a 4 digit code before updating. During the set-up after the update, the dialog demanded that I put in a 6 digit code. Putting in my 4 digit code would not satisfy the dialog. I was not provided any options- and backing out of the screen and trying again presented the same demand for a 6 digit code. The 3 finger flick up eventually provided an options button- which let me choose a 4 digit code. You can turn it off afterward in ‘Touch ID and Passcodes’.

If you flick right, you should get to a point in the screen where you can choose different options including a shorter four digit passcode or something alphanumeric.
