I‘m the original poster and I already had an established 4 digit numeric passcode. After updating, I was not getting an option button to choose anything except to provide a 6 digit code. Apple did a screen share and the rep saw the same scenario- that I had experienced many, many times. He had me flick both directions several times to verify that I was not being presented with any other options. In my previous replies, I have explained the full order of events.

If you flick right, you should get to a point in the screen where you can choose different options including a shorter four digit passcode or something alphanumeric.
