Hi. I think I have the answer.
I'm using an iPhone 12 Pro, but I think the settings should be the same.
First, sounds do have to be turned on in the rotor for this to work. It
doesn't matter how the mute switch is set, this is totally a voice over
issue.
Go to Settings, Accessibility, Voice Over, Audio, then Sounds/Haptics
and double tap to get to this menu.
Make sure the sounds button says sounds are on.
Now move to the bottom of the screen and swipe to the Screen locked
option and open it up. . Make sure the Sound is on. I also use
haptics for this, but sound is what you need, so. . . double tap to be
sure it is on. If not you'll here sound off.
If you double tap on preview, you'll only hear the sound the phone makes
when the screen is locked, but it does work.
Now lock the phone, then wake it up and touch the lower right hand
corner and you should have the first popping noise signalling you're in
the right place to swipe up.
Hope this helps.

Hi:
The problem is not that the side switch is on mute.
The problem is that when she touches the bottom of the screen to get
to the home screen, she doesn’t here any sound to let her know that
she can slide up to the home or app switcher. She turned that off
because she had an iPhone 8 which had a home button. When she restored
from a backup when they set up her iPhone 12 Pro max, that option is
still turned off.
I can not remember the name of that sound and can not turn it back on
for her.
We’ve looked in accessibility, VoiceOver, where there is a “more”
button which describes the gestures, but it doesn’t mention the sounds.

Have you / they checked the mute toggle on the side of the phone,
Left side above the volume buttns?
Ensure it is flicked towards the face of the phone
To unmute if that is what the issue is.

Hello:
I have a perplexing problem.
I am working with a client who has turned off the sound that your
iPhone makes when you slide up from the bottom or down from the top of
the screen. Does anybody know what that sound is called and how do you
turn it back on?
I’ve never had this problem before. Mine has always worked and I never
wanted to turn it off!
