I am pretty sure the 4th wire is not required on other thermostats, but it is what delivers power to the thermostat. I know our Honeywell T5 can also be plugged into a nearby wall outlet with an adapter to receive power instead. In our case the thermostat is downstairs on a wall where the furnace is basically just on the other side of the wall so it was quite easy to pull a new wire through which makes of course for a cleaner installation. I would leave this for the installer to decide.

One of the things that makes it difficult to decide is the fact that I do not even if the wiring of my heating/cooling system has the Common wire, usually referred to as the C wire. So far the only smart thermostat I found which does not need the C wire is Nest Gen3, also known as nest learning thermostat. However, I do not know how accessible the nest app is. Do you have any experience with this app? How accessible is it?
