Thanks Joshua and Anna for your replies. I sometimes overlook the simple solutions such as turning speech off with a 3 finger double tap or turning the volume down.
I was successful using Settings to set up a Focus Sleep customized event. The process was intuitive and I was able to easily add the contacts who can still call or text me while the focus is active, set the specific time range I want it active, and to set it to automatically turn on at bedtime. It also automatically turns off when your wake time arrives. If desired, you can even set specific apps that are not subject to the focus but I did not do this. I was very pleased with how well the setting functioned and I'm looking forward to no longer being wakened by my iPhone in the middle of the night. Those interested in doing this can go to Settings, Focus, Sleep and set up what you want. For instance, I have Do Not Disturb turn on automatically at 11 PM and turn off automatically at 8 AM. You can also turn one on for an hour, so I haven't tried this, but you could tell Siri to turn it on for 3 hours or some such. You could also turn the volume down while you're asleep.
