Apple makes six variants of each version of the iPhone 14 lineup. The
different variants have unique cell phone frequencies for the region
of the phone. For example, American cell phone carriers use
frequencies used in no other part of the world. Outside the big metro
areas, carriers support fewer frequencies and in some rural areas only
one or two. While most people won’t notice much of a difference on a
two-week vacation, it could be the case where everyone around you has
signal but you in a given place because you have many fewer
frequencies to use on your device. Already on my carrier, staff
becomes upset when people swap SIM cards with different phones. That’s
because network services are attached to the unique serial number on
the phone. For example, 5G network services and frequencies are made
available to devices registered to have 5G technology. eSIM is the
future except in totalitarian regimes like the People’s republic of
China, where freedoms are limited.
