I believe that the old advice you are referring to was in regard to NiCad 
batteries, which for the most part are no longer in use. The Lithium Ion 
batteries used today are much more forgiving, and as far as I know, will not be 
damaged by staying on a charger.
Also, the chargers used today are smarter, in that they contain a chip that 
will stop current when the battery reaches a full charge.
If you touch your Apple charging brick while it is charging, it feels very 
warm, but after the charge is complete it is cold. This is because it is no 
longer passing current to the battery.
