IN fact, if anyone really knew the history of Voice Dream they would know Winston wrote it originally for himself to learn iOS programming and to have something to read documents to him while he drove, ran, worked out, etc.
Then, he found out how useful it could be to people with Dyslexia and began focusing on that community and it became one of the most popular apps in the education field around the world. Then came including VoiceOver users in the app. And as I have said too many times, Winston was going to change to a subscription model anyway but wanted the app taken care of by a team rather than depending on just him, so he sold it to someone who could do just that. OK, it's a rhetorical question because I know the blind/visually impaired community is being referred to. However, just because Voice Dream Reader is designed to work extremely well with Voiceover and has features for low vision users, it is not an app specifically made for blind/visually impaired users. In fact, going on the App Store and reading reviews, I didn't see a single review from a blind person. The app is also extremely useful to people with dyslexia and just anybody who wants an app which can read all sorts of files, books or articles to them as they are running, working out, driving or doing whatever. This discussion makes it sound like the new owners are traitors to the blind community or that they owe us something since they choose not to be on the Viphone list or other Apple related lists. Just because Winston Chen decided to have a more hands-on approach, let's not demand every developer has to do this since in fact most of them don't. I don't think Amazon/Audible is subscribed to the Viphone list and neither is Microsoft or even Apple. The Applause Group bought Voice Dream LLC in April of 2023. Applause Group never said you would never have to pay. They said you didn’t have to pay right away. Jonathan’s take is pretty clear, this is a good business decision. But, you are spreading false information. Boycott it if you want and use something else, but do not give wrong information.
