Richard,

I suspect since BARD Mobile is already accessible with VoiceOver in its native form, those results you're getting are the very reason we recommend that screen recognition not be left on unless one is positive that it benefits the app in question. You can get very unreliable results with screen recognition turned on in an app not needing it.

Well, on my 13 pro, using BARDMobile with Screen Recognition is awful.

In places it says Image, a white letter on a gray background … or something equally useless.

If that is what a sighted person sees, I am glad they don’t have to use BARDMobile.

Screen recognition was also useful when the new SiriusXM app was released. It gave access to the mini-player which wasn’t seen by VoiceOver at all. If you want to see what it looks like, and how it might be useful, turn it on while using the BARD Mobile App, if you have it. It isn’t necessary to use the BARD Mobile App but screen recognition give it a very different interface and gives you a peek into what sighted users see.

Alan made me think of another point to make.

Since my Arboleaf app now works so well, in the VoiceOver Recognition settings, under Screen Recognition, there is a place to select apps for which you want screen recognition to turn on automatically when you open that app.

I added Arboleaf to that list, so this morning, when I launched Arboleaf, screen recognition turned on automatically.  When I exited the app, screen recognition turned off.

A very nice feature.

Just to echo Richard's point, screen recognition should definitely be in your rotor because apps are being updated continuously and in my experience, developers are using more graphical objects in their apps. If you're noticing an app that used to work and now VoiceOver doesn't seem to be speaking much of anything, try using the rotor to turn on screen recognition for that app to see if you get different results. I seldom leave it turned on for an app when doing this but I expect you'll develop a routine that works best for you.

I have a scale that I weigh myself on that is Wi-Fi made by Arboleaf.  Their app became very difficult to use after a recent update.

I decided to try Screen Recognition in their app; which has the same name, Arboleaf.

It works perfectly with screen recognition, in fact, it reads much better.  The information it gathers like your BMI reads on one line now instead of having to flick to the next line, etc.

In many cases, turning it on makes an app next to useless, but when it works, it works great.

This is why one should put it in their rotor and try it on apps that are not reading well but leave it off for most apps.

I keep hearing that screen recognition is good for some things.  Can someone give an example where it does some good?  I’d like to learn what it is supposed to do.

Hello,

Screen recognition should be in your rotor, so when you twist, you should be able to find it. Swiping up or down with 1 finger should toggle it on or off. If you don’t use it at all, then maybe taking it from your rotor suggestions would help.

Sometimes I think I’m going crazy, but for some reason, I cannot find how to turn off screen recognition and I can’t find the rotor to edit it. Any suggestions will be much appreciated. I know screen recognition has addressed here before, but I am not remembering exactly what was said. Thanks for any assistance.
