I am still on a mission to understand this Action business, as there is clearly no such thing on the rotor of this iPhone. Could it be under one of those vaguely untitled sort of umbrella Categories in Settings?

Here you can select exactly which folders your main screen should show and in what order you want them in. I have my business email and my main personal email set up on my iPhone, but instead of having to expand these accounts to get to the inbox, I have each inbox on the main screen separately at the very top. Underneath that and as my third option I have "All Trash" which shows me deleted messages from both accounts and if I want to delete/empty my trash I just do it in that mailbox so it's all gone. As my fourth pinned mailbox/view I have "Unread" which shows me exactly how many unread messages I have and just as the "AllInboxes" this is a unified mailbox which shows me unread messages from both accounts. After that I have "All Drafts" which I like so I can easily if I have any drafts in progress and finally below that I have the VIP mailbox followed by my two main accounts which I can expand if I want to get to any other folders I don't keep pinned to the home screen separately. If yours is not defaulting to actions when on a message, try turning it to Actions then do the gesture. As for the inbox, you could be dealing with the fact that your account, when you first touch it, says collapsed or expanded. If it says collapsed, you have to double tap on it to expand it. Then, flick right once and you will be on the inbox. I have my mail app set so that the inbox is at the top, and I have several mail accounts, so I pretty much have all the account inboxes in a particular order at the top, then if I keep flicking right through the account I will get to a place where they repeat and are collapsed.
