You don’t have to use any security if you don’t want to, but I would certainly recommend it because if you ever lost your iPhone or somebody stole it, they could access all your contacts and whatever other information you have on the phone. There are also certain features which require you to set up a PIN and, if you want, Face Id. For example, if you want to use Apple Pay and I assume also if you wanted to use the Passwords app to save passwords. If you are getting your new iPhone from an Apple Store I would highly recommend you make an appointment and get one of the apple Geniuses to help you with that, primarily I would ask them to focus on helping you to set up Face Id and also how to use the swipe gestures to get out of an ap back to the home screen, to bring up the app switcher etc.

Howa, not using a passcode or face ID is really a bad thing. Face ID is not that hard to get used to and really helps in regards to not having to type in passwords because face ID can be used instead of your password.
