To add one more fact to the unlocking topic for Canadian providers, you can
as Grant pointed out ask Telus to unlock your phone after 90 days, however,
that does not mean you can then go to another provider if you bought the
phone on a 3-year contract with full subsidy. It simply means that if, for
example, you are planning to travel you could get your phone unlocked and
use a different SIM card in another country, but you are still stuck with
Telus for the duration of your contract. If you went to a different provider
after, for example 6 months, Telus would make you pay whatever the penalty
is for terminating your contract after 6 months. However, it is good that
you at least can unlock after 90 days for a relatively reasonable charge,
Koodo, by the way, has the same policy as Telus, it's also $35 and 90 days.

Sieghard

Subject: Re: Great plan special for Canadians with Koodo or Fido

Just to add, the identical $56 plan is available at Fido and Virgin Mobile
Canada. Also to make sure people are aware, this is _not_ a plan which is
eligible for a full subsidy on an iPhone. As Sieghard mentioned you'll have
to pay a lot more money up front, or have an unlocked iPhone already.
Unlocking policies vary from carrier to carrier. Telus' is the best, it is
$35 and you simply have to have the phone registered on your account for 90
days. Rogers and Fido charge
$50 and your subsidy must have been fully repaid. Bell's unlocking policy is
the least economical, at $70, and is also unclear--it mentions that you have
to be month to month, but it doesn't mention whether, say, the iPhone could
have been activated on another person's account and with subsidy still
owing.
