Hi Ricardo, It does replace the default tone. I have different email tones set for my V.I.P mailbox, for my business account,my Hotmail account and my gmail account. I get to hear whichever tone I set when a message comes in and that works when mail is closed and by that I mean when it is not even in the app switcher and with my phone locked. I furthermore setup my V.I.P mailbox to display the message in the lock screen which means Voiceover will automatically read the message if my phone is sitting there locked and without me touching it. I don't do this for my other accounts, but if I am waiting for an important business related email and I hear the tone I selected for my personal mail I don't even have to pick up my phone to see what came in since I know from the alert tone it was a personal message.
