I was just reading this today and was similarly surprised. One thing I would do right away is switch off location services for the app; I don't believe there's any advantage to you to leave them on. Actually, this is the case for a number of apps, including VizWiz. There's no tangible benefit to you to have location services on and in fact it probably has a small impact on battery life.
