Good points, Neal. My reasoning for never brushing off a question, or an
ask for an assist, is I do know that some people just aren't comfortable
with technology enough to try to solve their own issues. I know several
such people, and though for me I don't quite understand why they always want
some one else to help them rather then do it themselves, it's not my place
to judge. I had to set up airline reservations for a friend whose going
away next week to guide dog school. Do I wish she'd learn to do this
herself, yes I do. But I know she won't. And she needed this done. So I
did it quickly for her, because she had to have it done and it wasn't worth
arguing with her about the fact she should learn to do it herself.
I know some one else who has an Ipad andI know without a doubt she'll never
learn to use it, but she has one.
Not my business.
So I guess what I am saying is I try to follow the golden rule, treat some
one like I'd like to be treated. And if I'm not comfortable doing the
online research and would rather have a human help me out, then I have that
right to ask for that help.

Subject: RE: What do they do???

Another thought.

Were I just beginning with computers or smart phones, I may not know enough
to know what I don't know or where to look for it. So, I will assume that
when people ask questions that I think they can find on their own, that this
is the case. Now, people will sometimes take advantage of this and ask
because it's just easier. But I can't tell which is which. So, I will try to
respect the fact that people who ask simple questions are people who don't
quite know enough to know where to look at this point. I may be fooled more
than once, but I have helped more than I have hindered.

And here is another thought. I think many would agree that it is often more
educational to ask someone who knows than to spend hours searching the
internet and reading reviews and other pages that may well have conflicting
data. So, even if I think someone should be able to find the answer on their
own, I will have to assume that they are asking for human input rather than
whatever input they may get on line.

Having said that, I still think giving people alternatives for where to look
for things in addition to helping them is a good idea. But I hope I can
always be open to helping no matter how silly I think the request, because
to them, it is not silly at all.

Also, remember that there are people on this list whose first language is
not English. They may not be as precise at asking questions as some, and
they may not be as good as others in perusing the web for their answers.

So, someone please take me to task if I am ever insulting to a question
asker. I may be brief, because I don't have a lot of time. Today I do and
the number of messages I have written to this list is much larger than most
days, but many of us are quite busy. However, that is no excuse for being
dismissive of a persons quest to learn.

Neal

Debby, it's not about asking questions. It's about doing something or not
doing something that one could do themselves. Let's say you want to take off
your shoe, and it is tied, well, you of course untie the shoe, right? Well
if you want to find out about an app, maybe you are going to buy it, or if
it is free, just put it on your phone, you search for it in the app store,
don't you? Well, I saw two successive messages on two different apps which
asked the question, what does it do, when they could have just as easily
looked to see for themselves. I certainly don't mind answering questions
about apps either, however the obvious causes me frustration, you wouldn't
ask me to untie your shoe, you would untie it yourself. If a person can
untie their shoe than they ought to be able to search for an app. Like last
week, I had forgotten how to delete an app from my phone, something I hadn't
done in about six months, what did I do? I didn't ask the list, which I
guess I could have, I looked up the information in the book entitled Getting
started with the iPhone. It helped refresh my memory as to what to do
regarding other things and I was indeed able to find the information on my
own, and I didn't clutter up the list with a question when I could easily
find the information on my own. I don't say, don't ask, I say don't ask if
you have the information at your fingertips.
